I have had the absolute pleasure to spend last week in Beautiful South Africa to discover the hair industry,

Arriving in  Johannesburg on Sunday I was treated to an amazing afternoon interacting with a Cheetah called Micheal at Farm Inn it was not your average Sunday! The farm is running a cheetah breeding programme.

I had gone out to South Africa to understand their industry more, and to allow me to design an education programme to excite and inspire the stylists of SA.

We know there is a decline globally of stylist entering the industry, but in SA this is already at an epidemic level. stylists are entering the industry, but sadly they are not staying. It is becoming almost impossible to attract young talent.

What can we do to stop the global warming of the hair industry? I was very lucky to spend time with some of the your stylists of the SA industry. I visited Franco international, Llyanda Hair, Gary RomPartners Hair Design, Edge unisex salon where I spent time listening and understanding the issues. A lot of stylists in SA get tempted with international travel on cruise ships where others can’t stay in the industry with the low wage structure.

Interestingly, Instagram is not big in SA, stylists have not yet adopted the platform, with the lack of industry awareness and no trade publication, the industry is suffering. It is down to the individual salon to build the industry awareness in school leavers by holding events within schools. I spent time talking about the social media revolution in the UK, how stylists can help to build salon brand awareness and drive clients to hair salons.

SA hair salons are one step ahead with retailing, clients understand the value of professional products and stylists are retailing! Well done SA!

For my final day we launch our ghd Nocturne collection at the Grand Africa Beach Cafe in spectacular Cape Town. 80 + bloggers and influencers were treated to ghd Nocturne themed cocktails on the beach sharing the ghd love. They could see the latests looks from the Nocturne collections and get the best selfie in town with the ghd kaleidoscope installation.

I presented the 2017 A/W trend reveal with 6 gorgeous models, we partied into the night under the African skies.

Thanks to the ghd SA team for having me and being such wonderful hosts!

The beach party…….

As if this was not enough on my final day I was treated to the most amazing experience, before breakfast we climbed Lions Head Cape Town. It was tough, I realise I need to go to the gym more but it was totally worth the climb. If you get the chance this is a must for the breathtaking 360 degree views of Cape Town. I’ll let the pictures do the talking!
